The Emergency Poet – An Anti-Stress Poetry Anthology is reissued, ten years after it first made its way into the hands and hearts of readers and edited by our own Deborah Alma.
First published in 2015, the anthology quickly became (in poetry terms) a bestseller, with over 30,000 copies sold. It offered a new kind of poetic medicine — a carefully prescribed dose of verse for those feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and in need of solace and reassurance. Its success helped usher in a wave of poetry-as-remedy collections marking the start of a quiet revolution in how we turn to poems for comfort and solace.
We’re proud to see The Emergency Poet return to print, more needed than ever, and just as full of comfort and healing as it was a decade ago.
We've all experienced moments when life feels overwhelming, and it can sometimes be difficult to see a path through troubled times. Organized into sections that follow a life through its challenges and hard times – from learning to be yourself, falling in and out of love and having children, through to ill-health, dying and coping with grief, as well as poems that serve as a tonic to lift the spirits – the anthology contains poems old and new, from world-renowned and lesser-known poets. What matters is that their words speak intimately, as though from one person to another, with grace and wisdom. They are soothing and carefully chosen to purge melancholy, provide hope and give courage in the most trying circumstances.
