Hello, and welcome to the Poetry Pharmacy weekly newsletter.
There’s a particular freshness to these September mornings. The sky seems bluer, the air sharper, and the lengthening light catches the edges of things and briefly sets them on fire. It’s a season that seems to ask us to pay attention.
So it feels like just the right moment to introduce Glimmers, our newest poetic prescription.
Earlier this year, we joined forces with The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press and invited poets to write us a glimmer: a tiny, previously unpublished poem capturing one of those fleeting moments of joy, comfort, beauty or connection that can brighten an ordinary day.
Each poem could be no more than four lines and 250 characters, small enough to be rolled up and dispensed as a poetry pill.
The poems were submitted anonymously and read blind, with just 26 selected by Wee Sparrow editors Claire Thom and Cristina M. R. Norcross, together with our own Deborah Alma.
And now they’ve been bottled.
Glimmers contains 26 entirely new miniature poems, each published here for the very first time. Unroll one when you need it, keep one in your pocket, leave one somewhere to be found, or simply take a moment to read and notice.
Because glimmers are the opposite of triggers: those tiny, sometimes easily missed experiences that give us a little lift. Sunlight falling across the kitchen table. A bird singing somewhere out of sight. An unexpected kindness. Something that reminds us there is still beauty and goodness to be found in the everyday.
Dosage: one glimmer, as required.
Possible side effects: increased noticing.
