Prescriptions for Calm

April is Stress Awareness Month, an annual event dedicated to increasing public awareness about the causes and cures of stress. This year's theme is Lead With Love - an invitation to be kinder and more compassionate to ourselves and others in an increasingly confusing world.

With the long Easter weekend behind us, those everyday stresses can soon stack up as normal life resumes. Recommended approaches for stress management are taking time for activities that we enjoy and that relax us.

At the Poetry Pharmacy, we love to spread the word on kindness and the therapeutic tonic of words, recommending reading as our number one remedy for stress. Activities that you can do every day but that only take a few minutes are a great way to build a habit of relaxation into your routine. We prescribe a poem a day with a comforting drink, settled in your favourite seat, preferably in the spring sunshine.

Our Poetry Pharmacists have a range of interests and specialisms that are perfect for a remedy of relaxation. As well as poets, we have gardeners, runners and a meditation teacher in the mix. Pictured are their favourite titles for rest and relaxation from our bookshop in Bishop's Castle.

Our Prescriptions

I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Happy 13th Birthday to us!

This week we have been celebrating two birthdays.
It was in April 2012 at Wenlock Poetry Festival, that Deb first prescribed poetry as the Emergency Poet in her 1950’s ambulance, with an attached pharmacy of poetic medicine. Her first concoction was a bottle of Poemecetamol. Since then, Deb has prescribed countless poems to 1000’s of people and gone on to open two Poetry Pharmacy bookshops, spreading a love of poetry to even more people. Pictured is our birthday card signed by some lovely customers in Oxford Street.

It was also William Shakespeare's birthday on 23 April and you can celebrate the bard's influence on modern-day literature and language with us- we have plenty of books in our bookshops,  his plays, poetry and biography, games and puzzles. You can see some of them and order from us online here. We also supply specially distilled Shakespearean potions and poisons. Shakespeare & Love (pictured below),
